On Thursday night, Dec. 17 the Lady Cats hosted the Sutherland Sailors. Unlike last season where Wallace trailed Sutherland at the end of the first quarter, the Lady Cats started the match determined to defend their home court. The Cats took every advantage, and the first quarter ended 14 to 1.

The second quarter saw the Sailors with a renewed ambition, but the Lady Cats were just too tough. The Lady Cats outscored the Sailors by 12 points, and they headed into the locker room with a commanding lead, 33 to 8.

The Cats started the second half energized, and ready to play.   The third quarter proved to be a battle of the defenses, neither team letting the other gain any momentum.   The Wildcats were able to gain five more points on their opponent lengthening the lead to 45 to 15.

The Cats were ready for the fourth quarter, but the Sailors were not ready to go quietly into the night. Both teams played a hard fourth quarter, but in the end the Sailors could just never get the momentum they needed, and the Wildcats were victorious.  As the buzzer sounded at the end of the fourth quarter the Cats dominated 61 to 26.

Offensively, senior Katie West (4 free throws) led the Cats with 18 points followed by junior Katelynn (1 field goal) with 9 points.  Junior Shanice Harris (2 free throws) and sophomore Emily Hasenauer each had 6 points, senior Josi Hasenauer, senior Jena Aylward, and sophomore Brooke Hochstetler (2 free throws) each had 4 points, senior Tarassa Swedberg (1 free throw) had 3 points, senior Annika Wickizer, Junior Laura O’Brien, and freshman Anna Griffiths each had 2 points, and junior Whitney Smith had 1 point.   Leading the team with offensive rebounds were West (6), Aylward (2), O’Brien (2), freshman Chelsie Sowle (2), Swedberg (1), Harris (1), and Hochstetler (1).  Leading the team with assists were Hild (2), O’Brien (2), West (1), and Griffiths (1).

Defensively, Harris led the Cats with 7 rebounds and 1 steal followed closely by Hochstetler with 4 rebounds, 1 block, and 3 steals, Aylward with 4 rebounds, 1 block, and 2 steals, and West with 3 rebounds, 1 block, and 3 steals. Hild had 3 rebounds and 3 steals, O’Brien had 3 steals, Swedberg had 2 rebounds and 1 steal, Smith had 2 rebounds, Wickizer had 1 rebound and 1 steal, and J. Hasenauer had 1 steal.

When school resumes after vacation, the Lady Cats will have a very hectic schedule their first week back.  On Tuesday, Jan. 5, they will travel to Curtis to play Medicine Valley.  On Friday, Jan. 8, the Wildcats will host Arthur County.
