The Lady Plainsmen were on the road again, this time at a tournament with seven schools, held at Cozad, Saturday, Oct. 24, which gave them an opportunity to hone their skills with some teams they weren’t used to playing, finishing in a respectable third place.
Making short work of the first game, they beat Valentine in two quick sets, 25-13 and 25-15, dominating play throughout.
Valentine’s costly mistakes at the service line and net errors aided in the Lady Plainsmen victory.
Sophomore Kristin Beck stepped into some big shoes this week, filling in for senior setter Mackenzie Hite, who temporarily vacated her position while battling illness.
“Kristin did a fantastic job of stepping up and doing her job,” said Coach Penny Hite.
The second contest of the day presented a tougher challenge for the Plainsmen, as they were beaten in two sets by Alma, 15-25 and 23-25.
“We had some great net play from Tanya Metcalf and Gabrielle Patrick along with five kills from Jenni Sis, but we couldn’t keep the momentum from shifting,” said Hite. “We cost ourselves with too many serve receive errors (14), although had a near perfect serving game.
In the second set the Plainsmen were back in the game, placing the ball better and blocking more confidently, said Hite, but couldn’t close it in the end.
In their final game of the day, the Plainsmen met with Gothenburg for the third time this season.
“I have to be honest and say that beating a team for a third time in one season can be difficult and I wasn’t sure that we could do it,” said Hite. “But we learn from teams and the girls knew exactly what to do.”
Gothenburg’s Emily Max tended to dominate the front row, hampering the Plainsmen offense in the second set, but once they went back to basics and remembered their fundamentals, they walked through the third set with total ease, said Hite.
Prior to the tournament at Cozad, the girls took part in a triangular in Kimball on Tuesday, Oct. 20. They will host their own triangular with Bayard and Garden County on Friday, Oct. 30, beginning at 5 p.m.
